In November 2019, Sherman Theatre became Wales’ first Theatre of Sanctuary.
Our Creative Engagement and Front of House teams work with partner organisations to welcome Cardiff’s refugee and asylum seeker community to the theatre. Members of the community have taken part in events and workshops and have got to know the Sherman through tours led by theatre team members. They have also appeared on our stages in community productions like Love Cardiff, 50 Years of Your Stories. Many community members have signed up to join Sherman 5 or become volunteers to further their connection with the theatre.
We take seriously our role in raising awareness of the experiences of sanctuary seekers in our city and the huge contribution they make to Cardiff.
Sherman Theatre endorses the City of Sanctuary charter and pledges the following to people seeking sanctuary in the city:
- A warm welcome
- Free tickets to shows for Sanctuary Seekers
- Opportunities to volunteer
- Pre-show support and creative activities for group visits
- Access to learning opportunities / theatre tours / workshop spaces
We support the ‘City of Sanctuary’ vision that the UK will be a welcoming place of safety for all and proud to offer sanctuary to people fleeing violence and persecution.
We endorse the City of Sanctuary Charter, and agree to act in accordance with City of Sanctuary values and apply the network principles within our work (as far as our specific context enables us to).
We recognise the contribution of people seeking sanctuary. People seeking sanctuary are welcomed, included and supported within our context.
