Theatre of Sanctuary

Sherman Theatre is Wales’ first Theatre of Sanctuary

Share

In November 2019, Sherman Theatre became Wales’ first Theatre of Sanctuary.

The status awarded by City of Sanctuary recognises the Sherman as somewhere refugees and asylum seekers can feel safe, welcome and supported.

Our Sherman 5 programme works with partner organisations to welcome Cardiff’s refugee and asylum seeker community to the theatre. Members of the community have taken part in special workshops and have got to know the Sherman through tours led by theatre team members. Many community members have signed up to join Sherman 5 to further their connection with our theatre. Current initiatives include a collaborative project with the One World Choir.

We take seriously our role in raising awareness of the experiences of sanctuary seekers in our city and the huge contribution they make to Cardiff.
We have recently worked in partnership with the One World Choir to compose and record a new song, reflecting the experiences of people seeking sanctuary in our city.

Sherman Theatre offers the following to people seeking sanctuary in the city of Cardiff:

  • A warm welcome
  • Free tickets to shows for Sanctuary Seekers
  • The opportunity to volunteer with Sherman 5 or as Volunteer Ushers
  • Pre-show support and creative activities for group visits
  • Access to learning opportunities / theatre tours / workshop spaces
