Sherman Theatre announces participants in its flagship writing programme

Sherman Theatre has announced the 16 writers who have been selected take part in its nine- month long writer development programmes. The scheme is divided into a programme for writers working in the Welsh language - Cylch Sgwennu’r Sherman and a programme for writers working in English – Sherman Writers Group. These major initiatives to nurture and support Welsh and Wales-based writers will see participants develop their initial idea for a play which they submitted at the application stage into a final draft. The writers will work closely with the Sherman’s Literary Team – Literary Manager Branwen Davies and Literary Associate Alice Eklund as well as the theatre’s Artistic Director Joe Murphy and guest writers and directors to develop their plays. The sessions will take place monthly both in person and online. The schemes are part of a range of work led by the Literary Team to connect with writers including open script submission windows, reading clubs, writers nights and one to one pit stop sessions.

Over 90 pitches were received from writers wishing to take part in the scheme. The selected writers hail from across the country from North to Mid Wales to the South and represent a diverse range of lived experience. The writers taking part in Cylch Sgwennu are: Ceri Ashe, Bethan Davies, Mari Izzard, Gareth Evans-Jones, Bethan Jones, Rhiannon Lloyd Williams, Wyn Mason and Kallum Weyman. The Sherman Writers Group comprises of: Tess Berry-Hart, Emma Cooney, Laura Dalgleish, Ciaran Fitzgerald, Paisley Jackson, Natasha Kaeda, Tom Price and Dan Tyte.

Branwen Davies has said “We’re excited to be forging and building a relationship with 16 writers who we feel have a unique voice and interesting ideas that we are keen to encourage and develop further. Over the course of 9 months the writers will be mentored and guided from their initial pitch idea to a final draft of a full length play. Throughout the course regular feedback will be given on their writing and an opportunity to share work and engage with writers who are associated with the Sherman. It feels good to be able to bring writers together in a supportive space to share and learn together.”

Joe Murphy has said “Developing and supporting original voices in Welsh theatre through programmes such as Sherman Writers Group and Cylch Sgwennu’r Sherman is at the heart of what Sherman Theatre exists to do. We are delighted to be working over the next nine months with 16 writers who have something unique to say and we can’t wait to get started working with them to develop their ideas into full length drafts.”
