World Premiere

Little Red Riding Hood is the perfect introduction to theatre for children aged 3 – 6.

Christmas! It’s all about the presents, right? Giving and receiving them (but mainly receiving them). At least that’s what Red thinks… Especially when a super cool new red cape turns up in her stocking!

But when she gets lost in the woods on the way to her grandma’s house, her encounters with a hungry wolf show her that maybe Christmas is about more than just playing with her new toys. Join Red for a magical adventure filled with songs and laughter this festive season. This is going to be the best Christmas EVER!

Each Christmas our Studio shows offer a fun, new imaginative take on a classic fairytale. Over the years the Sherman has introduced generations of children to theatre with these shows. Following the success of Hansel and Gretel last year, writer Katie Elin-Salt returns with her second Christmas show for under-7s.

This performance is in English. Yr Hugan Fach Goch will be performed in Welsh at separate performances.

The performances on 1 and 2 November are Pay What You Want.

Writer

Katie is a writer/actor originally from Bridgend, South Wales. After graduating from RWCMD in 2010, she has performed in many UK and Wales productions including several at the Sherman including Crouch Touch Pause Engage and most recently playing the role of Cinderella in last's years Tales of the Brother's Grimm. Katie started writing in 2017 - after encouragement and support from companies such as Dirty Protest and Chippy Lane. Katie was a member of the Royal Court/NTW playwriting scheme in 2018 and through this wrote her first play Splinter - which was produced virtually during the pandemic by Far Away Plays. Her second piece Sprinkles was developed alongside Dirty Protest, and after several developments it is also being performed here in the studio this Christmas. Her first fully commissioned piece Celebrated Virgins was produced by Theatre Clwyd in 2022 - and picked as one of the "top ten shows of the year" by the telegraph. As a writer for screen, Katie was a member of BBC Welsh Voices 2022 and is currently working on her first screenplay. This is Katie's first work for young people, and one she is hugely excited by. Katie has spent many years working with children as a lead tutor, primary school teacher and arts therapist. Through the pandemic - Katie developed her own inclusive arts project for young people Create-a-space, and is currently part of developing a theatre company that promotes inclusive theatre for PMLD young people, alongside the charity Oshi's World. Katie is very passionate about making the arts exciting for young people. This work is inspired by the children and young people she currently works with in the Sherman's Youth Theatre, Introduction to Playwriting and various creative outreach projects. Katie would also like to dedicate this play to her four year old nephew Spencer Peach, who has been a huge fan of the Sherman's Christmas show for the past few years. She thanks him for his support in the writing of this project, giving particular thanks for the inspiration for a certain sugar loving squirrel, who she hopes you all enjoy.

Assistant Director

Elin trained at the RWCMD and works as an actor, writer and director. She has performed at the Sherman theatre on numerous occasions including a whole host of Christmas shows such as Alice in Wonderland, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Hansel and / a Gretel. Her debut play as a playwright, Yn Ei Blodau was produced in the Sherman's studio theatre as part of their Get It While It’s Hot season of work. Other stage work as an actor includes shows for National Theatre Wales, Theatr Clwyd, Theatr Genedlaethol, West Yorkshire Playhouse, The Other Room, Dirty Protest and Volcano Theatre. On screen she was appeared in The Pact, Will, Doctors, Gwaith Cartref and Crash. Previous work as Director includes Nythu for Volcano Theatre. Hyfforddodd Elin yn CBCDC ac mae'n gweithio fel actor, ysgrifennwr a chyfarwyddwr. Mae hi wedi perfformio yn Theatr y Sherman ar sawl achlysur gan gynnwys llu o sioeau Nadolig fel Alice in Wonderland, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a Hansel and/a Gretel. Cynhyrchwyd ei drama gyntaf fel dramodydd, Yn Ei Blodau, yn Stiwdio’r Sherman fel rhan o’u tymor o waith Get It While It’s Hot.
