Back in November 2021 the Sherman Theatre announced their Writers Group and Cylch Sgwennu brought together by the Literary Department; Branwen Davies and Alice Eklund. These 16 writers completed a nine-month long development programme in both Welsh and English. This major initiative nurtured and supported the writers as they developed their initial ideas for a play which they submitted at application stage to a final draft. Over the course of the nine months, the writers worked closely with the Literary Department, Artistic Director Joe Murphy as well as guest writers who ran sessions in person and online.

The selected writers hail from across the country from North to Mid Wales to the South and represent a diverse range of lived experience. The writers who took part in Cylch Sgwennu are: Ceri Ashe, Bethan Davies, Mari Izzard, Gareth Evans-Jones, Bethan Jones, Rhiannon Lloyd Williams, Wyn Mason and Kallum Weyman. The Sherman Writers Group comprised of: Tess Berry-Hart, Emma Cooney, Laura Dalgleish, Ciaran Fitzgerald, Paisley Jackson, Natasha Kaeda, Tom Price and Dan Tyte.

This initiative has brought us to a showcase event to present extracts from the plays created by those writers. Over the course of the evening you will hear 12 of the plays we developed over the project. There will be a mixture of Welsh, English and bilingual pieces. The pieces will be script in hand readings directed by Alice Eklund and Matthew Holmquist (Red Oak Theatre). Red Oak Theatre is the Sherman Theatre’s Company in Residence and you can read below about the installations that will be on display at the Sherman throughout the process.

In partnership with the Sherman Theatre Writer’s Group Showcase, Red Oak Theatre and RWCMD present a series of installations by designer Llew Morgan. The three installations are made in response to the plays that will be presented at the showcase and will sit in the Sherman’s Foyer in the build up to the event and after it. All of the installations are interactive and give audiences the opportunity to listen to extracts of the writers, encouraging the public to literally step into the world of plays and take it all in.
