Sherman Theatre and Doctor Who

Whilst we are celebrating our 50th birthday this year, there is another institution celebrating its 60th – Doctor Who! In fact we both share the same anniversary – the 23rd November! Over the years we have had a plethora of cast and creatives walk through our doors who worked on Doctor Who. Here are a few highlights –

Russell T. Davies, now head writer and showrunner of Doctor Who from 2005-2010 and 2022-Present first started out in our postgraduate acting classes in the mid 1980’s and later produced artwork for our shows!

Gareth Armstrong will be familiar to fans as he played Count Guiliano in 1976’s The Masque of Mandragora – after this though he was co-artistic director when the Sherman first started producing their own shows…the first of which was The Winter’s Tale which starred…

David Collings – familiar to fans from several performances over the years including The Robots of Death, Mawdryn Undead and Revenge of the Cybermen. In The Winter’s Tale he played Leontes.

Peter Halliday was also a regular return performer in Doctor Who and he starred in No more sitting on the old school Bench in 1989. In Doctor Who he is most famous for appearances in The Invasion, City of Death and Carnival of Monsters.

Into the modern era and Sherman stalwart Helen Griffin starred in 2006’s two parter Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel. Playing fan favourite Mrs Moore in Doctor Who, Helen had already written and starred in dozens of plays at Sherman Theatre. Helen sadly passed away in 2018 and is very missed.

Most recently at the Sherman Theatre playing a sassy cat in Milly Liu, Francois Pandolfo has appeared in a number of shows including The Taming of the Shrew and Alice in Wonderland. In Doctor Who, he played Quintus in 2008’s The Fires of Pompeii alongside David Tennant, Karen Gillen and Peter Capaldi!

Catrin Stewart recently played Elin Tate in Hero of the People at Sherman Theatre and will be instantly recognisable to Doctor Who fans. Catrin played Jenny Flint in Doctor Who from 2011-2014 and continues to reprise the role in audio adventures.
