Healing Banner

Share
Our Healing Banner was created on 20th June 2022 by Sherman 5 Members, which included groups from Cathays Community Centre and our Sanctuary Stories sessions.

The botanical theme of the banner is inspired by Refugee Week’s theme of healing.

All of the plants depicted are associated with healing, peace and sanctuary across different cultures around the world. They include Aloe Vera, Yarrow, Queen Anne’s Lace (Wild carrot), Olive, Mistletoe, White Heather and Tulip. The smiles symbolise a spirit of openness and welcome. And finally, contributors have added words of welcome, greeting, healing, and being at peace with oneself in different languages. It was designed by artist Jessica Akerman who works with pattern, colour and diverse materials to explore social histories and place. Working across sculpture, installation, social practice and performance, her work is often site-responsive and shaped by architecture, places and their inhabitants.
