Company in Residence

Supporting Wales’s most exciting emerging theatre companies.

Every two years Sherman Theatre supports an emerging Welsh or Wales-based theatre company whose work we are excited by.

The Company in Residence receives support and guidance from our Artistic team to help them develop and present new work. In addition, the Company in Residence benefits from the knowledge and expertise of the theatre’s administrative departments including Finance, Development and Marketing.

Joining the Sherman’s artistic family will be two new Companies in Residence, both of which are boundary-pushing companies creating innovative, non-traditional work. Coven Xperience is an experiential arts company dedicated to creating groundbreaking, spatial sound experiences that amplify those who feel outside the circle, while Matsena Productions is a performance company focusing on physical storytelling while drawing on the Zimbabwean heritage and Black Welsh identity of the brothers who founded it. Both companies will be embedded within the core team. Sherman Theatre will act as a creative home where ideas can evolve and risks can be taken. Conversely, the Sherman will benefit from exposure to new practices and ways of working to further develop its work for audiences.

COVEN XPERIENCE

Theatre told us to behave, Nightlife knew better.
We create stories designed to be lived in.
Moments where individual listening becomes a collective feeling.
Through sound, story and performance, we invite audiences into worlds that unfold around them, creating moments of connection, participation and togetherness.
Xperiences you don’t just hear alone.
Xperiences you feel together.

MATSENA

Matsena is a performance company founded by brothers Anthony and Kel Matsena. Focusing on physical storytelling, its work draws on Anthony and Kel’s Zimbabwean heritage and Black Welsh identity. It combines hip-hop, krump, ballet, contemporary and African dance, as well as theatre, music, voice and poetry. The company creates urgent and joyful, multidisciplinary performances that tell untold stories of personhood and belonging.

Matsena’s works include BOY-ISH (2026 Welsh tour); THE HERDS / THE REMAINING SILENCE (2025 Venice Biennale); KABEL (2026 Apollo Theater New York City, 2025 Sadler’s Wells); OLYMPIC FUSION (2024 Swansea Arts Weekend); BROTHERS IN DANCE (2022 BBC Wales, BAFTA Cymru winner Best Single Documentary) and SHADES OF BLUE (2021/22 Sadler’s Wells / Royal Welsh College / DanceEast). Anthony and Kel have also worked with companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Frân Wen, National Dance Company Wales, Welsh National Theatre, Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance and Welsh National Opera and they are fellows of Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
