Show Information

A bold new play by Jo Clifford based on Shakespeare’s contentious classic.

Petruchio is a woman who isn’t afraid of a challenge. Which is just as well because her latest task is to tame a beautiful but waspish boy called Kate. But Kate isn’t going to make it easy for her… Has Petruchio bitten off more than she can chew?

Jo Clifford has exploded Shakespeare’s contentious classic to create a raucous and riotous new play which invites us to imagine a world in which women hold all the power. Exploring gender, identity and power this is The Taming of the Shrew for our times.

Jo Clifford has said about this new play: "I was asked to adapt The Taming of the Shrew way back at the beginning of my career. But I hated the bullying and the misogyny in the play so profoundly that I turned the commission down. It's a huge joy to return to the play now and transform it from a queer perspective. So my Shrew no longer supports the patriarchy. Instead it turns it upside down. And it allows us to dream of a matriarchal world...."

With our world premiere production of Jo Clifford’s The Taming of the Shrew, we are inviting you to imagine a world in which women hold all the power. Not only has Jo challenged the world of the play, but we are challenging the whole theatrical experience and doing things a little bit differently. We look forward to you joining us on the journey into this spirited and unconventional take on The Taming of the Shrew.
