Originally written by Hans Christian Andersen the much-loved Children’s tale The Ugly Duckling has been adapted for the stage by Sherman Theatre Playwright-in-Residence Katherine Chandler with this brand new production being directed by Sara Lloyd.

Full of enchanting music and playful characters The Ugly Duckling / Yr Hwyaden Fach Hyll is the perfect heart-warming treat for ages 3-6 and their families this Christmas. With Welsh translation from Mererid Hopwood, this production will be performed at separate shows in either Welsh or English.

Three outstanding Welsh actors have been cast in this charming new production: Mari Beard, Tom Blumberg and Jed O’Reilly.

The story follows the brave Ugly Duckling as they waddle their way through the changing seasons on an exciting journey to a place they can call home; meeting a whole host of charming farmyard friends on the way.

Sherman Theatre’s Artistic Director Joe Murphy has said “I am thrilled to be welcoming artists of the calibre of Katherine Chandler and Sara Lloyd into the building this Christmas to create work for our under 7s. Our audiences are in for a real treat. These kinds of shows are such a great way to introduce little ones to live theatre, and I couldn’t imagine a better early experience of what plays can be than this brilliant version of The Ugly Duckling / Yr Hwyaden Fach Hyll which is performed in both English and Welsh. I’m so pleased that we are able to present this bilingual work not only at the Sherman but around South Wales.”

In recent years Sherman Theatre has firmly established its bilingual Christmas production as one of Cardiff’s essential seasonal treats. Thousands of school children and families have been spell-bound with the delightful mix of engaging story-telling, brilliant performances, imaginative sets and costumes (all created at Sherman Theatre by the talented team backstage), and the warm welcome from the staff who are dedicated to making every visit enjoyable.

The Ugly Duckling / Yr Hwyaden Fach Hyll is brimming with music and song, fun and laughter, clever staging and beautiful costumes, creating magical experiences for everyone this Christmas.

The Ugly Duckling / Yr Hwyaden Fach Hyll is at Sherman Theatre on the 8 & 9 November and between 2 – 31 Dec. And, as in previous years, audiences across south Wales will get the opportunity to see the show on tour as it will visit Pontypridd, Tredegar, Ystradgynlais, Penygraig, Porthcawl, Chepstow, Newport and Blackwood throughout Nov.
