TYDFIL TRUTHS: MERTHYR STUDENTS CREATE COMPELLING NEW AUDIO DRAMA

29 Jan 2021

Performing Arts students at The College, Merthyr Tydfil have written and performed a new audio drama: Tydfil Truths. The play brings into focus how the students see the world, what issues matter most to them and the reality of growing up in a Valleys town.

Devised and created by the young people, and told in their own voice, Tydfil Truths tackles contemporary subjects that will resonate with you no matter where you are. Tydfil Truths is their world, in their words.

Tydfil Truths is the latest collaboration between The College, Merthyr Tydfil and Sherman Theatre. Last year the students turned their conversations with local care home residents into the haunting inter-generational audio drama Tydfil Tales.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working on Tydfil Truths. Previously, in terms of where I stand in society, I have become used to being told to "sit down" and "shut up", however through the process of making this production I have learnt that I do indeed have a voice and I intend to use it in the future.” Esther Usher, Performing Arts student

I am really pleased with our radio play and proud of what we have created. I think it represents many of the themes and issues that are important to us all.” Tommy Church, Performing Arts student.

Tydfil Truths will be available to stream free via the Sherman Theatre website from 29 January.

Joe Murphy, Sherman Theatre’s Artistic Director, said: “We are delighted to be able to share the exceptional work of the students at The College, Merthyr Tydfil. Telling the stories of our communities is at the heart of what the Sherman does, so sharing and supporting a piece by these hugely talented people in which they express their view of the world in their words was an easy decision to make.”

The audio drama was facilitated by Sherman Theatre’s Creative Engagement Manager Timothy Howe, Samantha Alice Jones, and Kayleigh Adlam. Tydfil Truths was conceived, written and performed by students at The College Merthyr Tydfil, and edited by Chris Young. Tydfil Truths was a project funded by The College Merthyr Tydfil and National Lottery Awards For All Wales with additional support from Sherman Theatre.
