TAITH submissions call out

11 Aug 2015

We are thrilled to announce that we are open for TAITH submissions.

What is TAITH?

TAITH is our bilingual new writing initiative to develop and showcase innovative and exciting new work. TAITH selects and develops three brand new 10 minute pieces through a series of one to one discussions and workshops. The three pieces are then rehearsed and performed in our studio space. TAITH focuses on the development period for the playwright and their piece, culminating in a day with a director and team of professional actors before a public showing of the work.

On Friday 20 November the three short plays will be read in our studio, in an evening of stripped back bilingual theatre.

The second part of the evening is a discussion between writers, directors and audience regarding the theme that inspired the writers – this time it's Motherhood, taken from our forthcoming production of A Doll's House.

A small selection of writers who submitted but were not selected for the readings will be invited to a skill development workshop and encouraged to submit again to a future TAITH event. All submissions will receive feedback.

"We are extremely pleased to be back with TAITH, it is an opportunity for writers to develop their craft and have the invaluable experience of hearing their work. For the audience, it's an opportunity to hear the heart of emerging Wales based writers and experience three short, bold and impactful pieces of work. "Motherhood" is a complex theme with plenty of room for interpretation. I'm looking forward to seeing how Wales' writers perceive, analyse and deconstruct the theme." Gethin Evans, Artistic Associate.

TAITH is the first point of contact to develop a relationship with Sherman Cymru as a writer. Twice a year Sherman Cymru will invite submissions for 10 minute plays, in Welsh or English, on a specific theme, style or subject.

Submission process

Submissions must follow these guidelines:

  • Be stimulated by the theme Motherhood
  • No more than 10 minutes long
  • Pieces may be in Welsh, English or Bilingual
  • Require no more than 3 actors to be performed
  • Writers must be Welsh or Wales based

Send your submission as PDF and saved as your name and script title, to literary@shermancymru.co.uk by noon on 8 September, 2015.

Selection process

Sherman Cymru's script reading panel will be reading all of the submissions and Sherman Cymru's Artistic Director and Artistic Associate will select the final three. The panel consists of writers Kelly Jones and Sherman Cymru's Playwright in Residence Katherine Chandler; Sherman Cymru's Associate Artist: Producer John Williams and Pluen founder Elgan Rhys.

The panel will be looking for bold, inventive and original writers who can appeal and connect to modern audiences. The three who show most potential will then be developed. This will be an intensive period of development, which will nourish the writer and the play.

All writers will be notified by mid-October.

Good luck, we can't wait to read your work!
