Christmas Treat for school children from across South Wales

23 Dec 2014

For the third year, Sherman Cymru has run a successful Christmas Schools Appeal with local businesses and philanthropists in Cardiff to support schools situated in disadvantaged communities of the city and beyond, who are unable to bring children to the theatre due to financial constraints of both the school and the families.

This year the Schools Appeal has managed to raise funds to enable 12 schools from disadvantaged areas across Cardiff and the surrounding areas to benefit  770 pupils during the festive season with a trip to the theatre to see Arabian Nights. Without the support of many local businesses, these young people would not have enjoyed the Christmas treat that many of us take for granted.

Some of the feedback from schools have been:

It is so important that the children experience live theatre as it raises their aspirations and they begin to understand that there is life outside their community. We have a number of children who like performing and drama and it is wonderful to see how these children especially, enjoy watching the actors and how the scenery and props are used. The children commented on the use of shadow and the lights. It was also good to see live performance of music in the production, the children have excellent music lessons from the music development team in Cardiff but don’t get to see instruments performed in any other context.”

With school budgets so tight at the moment we have great difficulty supporting the funding of such trips so we are very grateful to be.”

I would also like to add my thanks as many of our children would never get to a theatre to see a performance due to the cost. Watching their faces and excitement was lovely to see.”
