Sherman Cymru and Theatr Iolo are delighted to announce their Christmas show for 2015, a new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Princess and the Pea / Y Dywysoges a'r Bysen Fechan Fach, a fun filled story for the under 7s and their families. Adapted by the award-winning Welsh playwright, Katherine Chandler The Princess and the Pea / Y Dywysoges a'r Bysen Fechan Fach will be touring South Wales this November and December and returning to the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff for Christmas.

Following the sell-out success of last year's Christmas show for the same age group, The Ugly Duckling / Yr Hwyaden Fach Hyll, Sherman Cymru's Playwright in Residence, Katherine Chandler, will once again adapt a much-loved Hans Christian Andersen children's classic this year in a co-production with the award-winning young people's producing company, Theatr Iolo.

Directed by Theatr Iolo's Kevin Lewis, The Princess and the Pea / Y Dywysoges a'r Bysen Fechan Fach is the ideal treat for boys and girls aged 3-6, who love to hear stories, particularly about the mischief that can happen just before bed time.

Once upon a time there was a Prince who wanted to marry a Princess. But only a Real princess would do!  Then one night during a horrible gusty storm, whirlwinds and flashes of lightning, a beautiful young girl arrives at the Castle soaking wet... Is she a real Princess? Find out in this playful, lively story with a prince, princesses, lots of mattresses and a tiny little pea!

Award-winning Penarth based playwright, Katherine Chandler (Sherman Cymru's The Ugly Duckling / Yr Hwyaden Fach Hyll, National Theatre Wales' Silly Kings, Theatr na n'Og's We Need Bees, The Bankrupt Bride) has adapted this well-known title, which will tour across South Wales during November before returning to Sherman Theatre during December.

Katherine said: "I am thrilled to be adapting this adorable story for boys and girls of this age group. It's going to be fun, mischievous and playful. An unforgettable trip to the theatre for this age group."

The actors will be performing the show in Welsh and English both at the Sherman and on tour. The Princess and the Pea / Y Dywysoges a'r Bysen Fechan Fach has been translated into Welsh by Welsh actor and writer, Ceri Elen.

Directing the production is Theatr Iolo's Artistic Director Kevin Lewis. The award-winning Cardiff based company, Theatr Iolo has gained an international reputation for producing theatre for the very young. Sarah Argent, who has created many of Theatr Iolo's productions for this age-group including Luna (a co-production with Hullabaloo Theatre) will be working alongside Kevin and Katherine as Creative Consultant.

Kevin directed Theatr Iolo's widely praised Grimm Tales which was winner of Best Play for Children and Young People at the Theatre Critics of Wales Awards 2013.

Kevin said: "I am thrilled that Theatr Iolo and Sherman Cymru will once again be producing a Christmas show together, following the Snow Child/ Plentyn yr Eira a few years ago. This will be a lively Christmas treat for the whole family and for many children this will be their first experience of theatre. The Princess and the Pea / Y Dywysoges a'r Bysen Fechan Fach will be a fun and playful theatre experience with enchanting storytelling and music, and promises to be the perfect winter treat for children aged 3–6 and their families. We can't wait to create more magical and memorable Christmas experiences for young people."

Sherman Cymru is renowned for producing high quality family shows that incorporate imaginative storytelling and music ideal for very young children, such as The Ugly Duckling / Yr Hwyaden Fach Hyll, Corina Pavlova and The Lion's Roar / Corina Pavlova a'r Llew sy'n Rhuo and The Snow Tiger / Teigr Yr Eira. Sherman Cymru are thrilled to be working in partnership with Theatr Iolo to further strengthen the work produced for younger people in both Welsh and English.

The Princess and the Pea / Y Dywysoges a'r Bysen Fechan Fach will open at the Sherman Theatre on 6 and 7 November before touring across South Wales in November and returning back to the Sherman Theatre from 7 December 2015 to 2 January 2016. Full details of the tour will be announced shortly.
