Play readings

03 Apr 2020

12 Plays in digital spaces. Sherman Theatre and National Theatre Wales will work together with a range of independent companies and artists to produce play readings, showcasing the talent of playwrights, companies and creatives across Wales. The partnership will enable Welsh directors, actors, and designers to be fully supported and funded to deliver the reading, while providing a platform to share homegrown work, alongside contemporary classic titles that may yet to have been performed here in Wales.

This project will form part of Sherman Theatre’s Interval and National Theatre Wales’ Network programmes. Both programmes are designed to support artists during this difficult time and provide audiences with engaging online theatre experiences.

Joe Murphy has said “In these chaotic and uncertain times, I have been struck by the amount of people who have been reaching out to each other. It strikes me that all the dystopian films got it wrong, and that when the crisis came, far from turning us into selfish lone wolves, it has just reinforced that we are good neighbours who are there for each other. It’s been so energising to see, and be part of, the close collaborations across our industry that are committed to supporting artists and serving audiences. It reminds me of a great quote I once heard: “coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.” I couldn’t agree more and I am so excited that Sherman Theatre and National Theatre Wales will be working together on the exciting Play Readings project. In a time of limited resource, the Sherman looks forward to contributing to the project the resources we do have - our expertise in dramaturgy and new writing and the one resource many of us currently have – time.”
