New Welsh Playwrights Programme Writers Announced

15 Jun 2016

The Sherman are delighted to announce the writers of the New Welsh Playwrights Programme. Supported by the Richard Carne Trust, the programme was launched to develop the best of new writing talent.

Playwright Brad Birch (Royal Court, Sherman Theatre, Soho Theatre) is currently leading the writers through an eight week development programme.

He explains; "The intention behind the New Welsh Playwright Programme is to find the best new voices in Wales and hone their playwriting craft. Using a range of resources and stimuli - from texts (inside and outside theatre) to sound to visual arts - the Programme will push, provoke and inspire playwrights in a way that they might not have been before. It's the way that I have learnt and continue to learn."

Through this dramaturgical support, the shortlisted playwrights will be given the opportunity to deliver a full length play script. The scripts will then be read by the Sherman and a final script will be chosen to receive the Richard Carne Award of £1000. In addition to the financial prize, the Award will offer the opportunity of further development of the play at the Sherman Theatre.

The shortlisted playwrights are:

Brawnwen Davies
Catherine Dyson
Catrin Lowe
Christopher Harris
Greg Glover
Ieuan Watkins
Jacob Hodgkinson
Jafar Iqbal
Jon Berry
Julie Barclay
Kelly Jones
Matthew Ingram
Nicola Reynolds
Tracy Harris

The writers will be sharing their thoughts on the process, read the first blog here.
