Sherman Cymru Launches New Welsh Playwrights Programme

10 Mar 2016

The Sherman is launching a New Welsh Playwrights Programme, and the brand new Richard Carne Award of £1000, supported by the Richard Carne Trust. The Programme will select 12 exciting new playwrights from Wales and over 8 weeks deliver a series of workshops and training sessions that will help develop their skills in writing for theatre, led by playwright Brad Birch (Royal Court, Sherman Cymru, Soho Theatre). Through this dramaturgical support, the shortlisted playwrights will be given the opportunity to deliver a full length play script. All 12 scripts will then be read by the Sherman and a final script will be chosen to receive the Richard Carne Award of £1000. In addition to the financial prize, the Award will offer the opportunity of further development of the play at the Sherman Theatre.

The Programme is scheduled to begin in May 2016 and run for eight weekly sessions. To be considered for the Programme, please send at least 20 pages of your writing for the stage. This can be a complete short piece or an extract from a longer play. We are inviting all writers aged 18 and above to submit; the only requirement is that the playwright is either from or lives in Wales.

Please send your submission to along with your name and contact details by 12 noon on 22 April.
