Sherman Theatre’s Artistic Director Rachel O’Riordan has said “We have a responsibility as theatre makers to interrogate, challenge and re-examine stories which are seen as iconic and ‘ classic’. William Goldings’s Lord of the Flies examines closely the idea of masculinity and power and how toxic they can become. This is as relevant now as ever. However, as we reframe the story in 2018, something more is under interrogation. How we understand gender has changed fundamentally and forever; so how we look at a story which positions gender at its heart must also shift. The paradigm has changed and as theatre makers we must respond, reposition and take chances with text which can be perceived to be immutable. This classic ‘boys‘ tale becomes something more, something other, through our modern gaze. As the prism changes, so must theatre.”
