Show Information

Award-winning writer Chris Goode asked forty 8-to-10 year olds to talk about their lives. About being scared, getting lost, being brave, growing up. About the adult world that surrounds and awaits them. About family and faith and their favourite sweets.

In Monkey Bars, their words are spoken by adults - playing adults in adult situations.

Monkey Bars is a funny and endlessly surprising verbatim show which offers a revelatory insight into what children are trying to tell us about their lives that we don't always hear.

A Chris Goode & Company and Unicorn Theatre co-production in association with Brewery Arts Centre. Co-commissioned by Warwick Arts Centre and The Brewhouse Theatre & Arts Centre. Supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Arts Council England.

A hit at Edinburgh Festival 2012.

'Heartbreaking and hilarious.'
The List

Monkey Bars grabs you by the heart and mind... It moves you. It makes you think. It makes you laugh and it makes you well up more than once. Most of all, it will make you wonder why we adults don't take children a lot more seriously.
FIVE STARS - Whatsonstage

Goode’s production, featuring his trademark atmospheric soundtrack, is beautifully pitched.
FIVE STARS - Independent

Translated into adult situations, the words of children take on a new gravity, but also highlight the absurdities of the adult world... Fantastic.
FOUR STARS - Guardian

Highly entertaining... Hilarious and poignant by turns... Displays a powerful imagination that so many of us have lost as grown-ups.
