Show Information

The Devil Inside is a gritty, glittery, Faustian folktale, set firmly in the twenty-first century. Inspired by The Bottle Imp, a short story by Robert Louis Stevenson, this brand new opera echoes his most famous tale The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Two friends stumble upon a bottle that will change their lives, a bottle that can grant any wish. But there's a catch and the bottle demands a payment… Will the pair find their happy-ever-after or will the bottle be their undoing?

This evening of magic and enchantment, with a touch of Tales of the Unexpected, will keep you guessing, and leave you thinking ‘be careful what you wish for’.

The Devil Inside follows the outstanding success of Ghost Patrol, the previous opera written for Music Theatre Wales by composer Stuart MacRae and renowned novelist Louise Welsh. Winner of the South Bank Sky Arts Award and nominated for an Olivier, The Financial Times said 'it does everything modern opera is supposed to do: it asks questions, stirs the imagination, challenges complacency, grabs the heart. You come out feeling different – about love, life and death.'

A co-commission and co-production with Scottish Opera.
