Following hugely successful performances across the UK, Sherman Theatre will share Gary Owen’s award-winning play Iphigenia in Splott with audiences in Berlin and New York this spring.
Iphigenia in Splott will be performed at one of the world’s most innovative theatres, Berlin’s Schaubühne, from 6 – 8 April. From 9 May – 4 June, the play will be presented at New York’s 59E59 Theatre as part of its established Brits Off Broadway festival.
This exciting development demonstrates Sherman Theatre’s fast-growing artistic stature and underlines its position as one the UK’s major forces in new writing. This international tour aims to develop Sherman Theatre’s presence on the international stage. Artistic Director Rachel O’ Riordan says ‘I am so proud to be bringing the best of Welsh talent to an international audience. Playing at the Schaubühne in Berlin and at the 59E59 in New York puts the Sherman right at the heart of ground-breaking, world-class new work. We are honoured to have been selected, and to represent Wales on the world stage.’
These two high profile international engagements follow massively popular runs of this relevant and urgent play at the National Theatre, London, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, on tour across the UK and at home in Cardiff. Iphigenia in Splott has been recognised as one of the most important new plays of the past three years, winning both the UK Theatre Award for Best New Play in 2015 and the James Tait Black Prize for Drama in 2016. Sophie Melville reprises her acclaimed performance of Effie, a young woman who pays a high price for society’s shortcomings. Sophie was recently nominated in the Best Actress category at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2016 alongside Billie Piper, Helen McCrory and Noma Dumezweni.
Performances at the Schaubühne, Berlin go on sale 1 March.
Tickets for performances at 59E59, New York go on sale to the general public on 21 February.
