Margaret Jones steps down as Executive Director of Sherman Cymru

Following 40 years of working in the theatre industry Margaret Jones, who has been Executive Director of the Sherman since November 2013, formerly General Manager from December 1994, will step down at the end of the year.

Margaret started her career in theatre – like so many still do – working behind a theatre bar, in this instance, The Duke’s Playhouse in Lancaster.  Taking opportunities to work as a dresser and wardrobe assistant, tinkering in props-making, training as a projectionist, and finally taking up two part-time posts the first in Admin for the then TIE (Theatre-in-Education) team and the second as assistant to the Production Manager.

From here, working variously across FOH and admin, for TIE companies including M6 Theatre Company in Rochdale and Tynewear TIE; taking on the role as secretary of SCYPT (the Standing Conference of Young People’s Theatre); working in cities from Newcastle upon Tyne and Manchester to Plymouth; and in theatres from Contact Theatre, to Cheltenham Everyman, she eventually settled in Cardiff as General Manager of the Sherman, latterly as Executive Director.

Margaret says:

"I feel I’ve achieved an enormous amount through an amazing career and I’m proud to leave the Sherman in excellent hands whilst I pursue other interests and freelance work, and take a break from the 24/7 work ethic! For those who know me best, this is likely to involve bicycles!"

Chair of the Board of Trustees – David Stacey says:

"I, personally, as a long term Board Member have had the pleasure of working with Margaret at the Sherman for over 21 years. Her attention to detail and commitment to the Sherman has been extraordinary; she has become the foundation on which the Company has been able to progress through all of the usual problems associated with the Arts in the UK. Margaret will be sorely missed and virtually irreplaceable. On behalf of the Board, the staff and the greater Sherman family I thank her for 21 years of service and wish her every happiness and success in whatever she turns her hand to in the future."
