Òran Mór and Sherman Cymru are delighted to announce the cast for their first A Play, A Pie and A Pint co-production, which sees the ground breaking series of short plays come to Wales for the first time this March. The World Premiere of Matthew Trevannion’s Leviathan is performed by an all-female cast starring Claire Cage, Siw Hughes and Gwawr Loader.
Sherman Cymru’s Artistic Director, Rachel O’Riordan: “We thrilled to be working in a co-production with Òran Mór. The A Play, A Pie and A Pint series is a hugely successful and exciting way to present new work to audiences and make new plays happen. I am really proud we will be producing and presenting this World Premiere in Wales.”
Leviathan is a new play by Welsh playwright, Matthew Trevannion (Bruised) about three generations of women in the Valleys. As they soak up the last of the sun's rays in their back garden, beers in hand, the underlying tensions between the three of them are brought to boiling point thanks to revelations long buried. In this tale of familial ties, Matthew Trevannion casts a darkly humorous eye over the changing fortunes of people trying to detach themselves from their past.
Rachel continued, “Leviathan is set in the Valleys and is about three generations of women who, in varying ways, are co-dependent. The play explores the fallout of social deprivation, and it speaks in an authentic and funny voice. Matthew is from the Valleys himself and is exploring the role of female Welsh identity.”
“For an emerging playwright like Matthew, A Play, A Pie and A pint is a way of introducing his work to a much wider audience. Matthew is a really exciting playwright and it’s great to be able to introduce a new audience to his work.”
Matthew Traveannion was nominated for the Writers Guild Award at the Theatre Critics of Wales Awards 2012 for his production with Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Bruised.
Matthew said, “I am delighted that Leviathan will be a part of the A Play, A Pie and A Pint series as it is now cemented as a real cultural icon in Scotland. I feel very excited to see Leviathan there at Òran Mór, and at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, before it makes its way home to Wales at the Sherman Theatre.”
Leviathan will be performed by Claire Cage (BBC’s Holby, Casualty and Being Human) will play Karen who is the mother to Hannah, played by Gwawr Loader (Sherman Cymru’s The Sleeping Beauties and BBC Wales’ The Indian Doctor). Pobol Y Cwm and Gwaith / Cartref star and BAFTA Cymru award winning actress Siw Hughes will play the role of the Grandmother, Mavis, following last year’s powerful and comic performances in Sherman Cymru and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama’s Fe Ddaw’r Byd I Ben and Sherman Cymru’s Trwy’r Ddinas Hon.
A Play, A Pie and A Pint will start at the earlier time of 6.30pm allowing audiences to come straight from work to enjoy a pint and a pie, made by Foxy’s Kitchen, before the performance.
