EMERGING DIRECTOR JOINS THE TEAM FOR THE CHERRY ORCHARD

10 Aug 2017

Paul Jenkins has been confirmed as the recipient of this year’s Assistant Director Bursary from the JMK Trust in partnership with Sherman Theatre. Paul will assist Rachel O’Riordan on the upcoming world premiere production of Gary Owen’s version of The Cherry Orchard. This arts scholarship, funded by The Carne Trust, will provide this talented emerging director with a unique learning and training opportunity.

Paul is a longstanding member of Sherman Theatre’s JMK Directors Group. In July 2016 he directed the Sherman Players co-production with the RSC’s Open Stages programme of As You Like It. In April 2017, Paul was then Associate Director on Sherman Theatre’s community production Love, Cardiff: City Road Stories. Paul Jenkins has said ‘I'm thrilled to be working at Sherman Theatre on such an inspired project. I couldn't wish for a better training opportunity with an exceptional creative team.’

The Assistant Director Bursary is the latest collaborative project between the JMK Trust and Sherman Theatre. Previous recipients include Chelsey Gillard (Chelsey will direct The Burton Taylor Affair this November for Sherman Theatre) and Jac Ifan Moore (Jac directed World Domination for Sherman Theatre earlier this year). Both organisations are committed to nurturing the best Welsh and Wales-based directing talent. Sherman Theatre has run the regional JMK Directors Group for developing young / emerging directors for the past two years. Over 80 people are currently signed up as members of the group. Members are provided with workshops, networking events, access to mentoring and job opportunities to help aid their development. The JMK Directors Group at Sherman Theatre is funded by The Carne Trust.
